In my hunt for graduate school, I'm trying to get some new work ready for my portfolio. I have some ideas for a for making two new short books with matching movies, we're you read the books and watch the movies at the same time, and get lost between the two. So, in taking reference photos for one of the books, I began flipping through all the shots I had taken, and I saw a little movie. So, I opened up iMovie, and threw it together. At first I thought I was just wasting time, but it actually helped me see the pacing and page order I wanted a lot more clearly. So now picking my shots for book should be no problem!

Hey all, at the recent involvement fair, I decided I would keep myself busy as I manned the Illustration Club booth by drawing.

Having jut read the first volume of Mouse Guard, I found myself with mice on the brain. So, I scanned some of those drawings, and now I'm trying out my hand at coloring (probably my weakest area).

I think it went pretty well, but I definitely need to spend some more time playing with brushes in photoshop.

I N _ T H E _ S T U D I O

Here's a peak into my home life. I've recently been spending quite a lot of time in my studio, attempting to get a jump start on my senior project this upcoming semester. After cleaning out our incredibly crowded loft, I've made lots space for myself. You can also see that I like to surround myself with art that I've collected over the years, and lots of books that inspire me.

Recently I've been looking very closely at Craig Thompson, especially his book Blankets.

And if you're looking closely, you've noticed that I've been working on tracing paper a lot. I plan on having my upcoming book be comprised of screen prints, rather than traditional pencil and ink drawings. So I use the tracing paper to make the preliminary drawings for the screen prints, which are then transfered to screens later. To make sure the screens come out cleanly, I use a variety of different sized paint markers, as well as an india ink brush pen, which I find gives a nice combination of clean and decisive lines, while still retaining a looseness in the drawings thanks to the brush. And as for erasing, I use an X-Acto blade to cut out pieces of the drawing that aren't working, and then tape over a fresh piece of tracing paper to fix it.

There are some images of my upcoming, so far untitled, book seen down below. I currently have 6 pages completed for the book, and will have more detailed photos of the book coming soon.

With 2011 being the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps, in my Illustration class this past fall, we were tasked with making posters for the event. I started with some very complex sketches, but eventually worked my way to this, which I am incredibly pleased with. Here are two different versions of my screen printed poster.

This past semester, I took a mold making class, where I learned several processes to make multiples of objects. Our mid-term project for the class was create multiples using two or more starting object, and then create 9 hybrid pieces of art, 3 made of all porcelain, 3 made of all latex, and then 3 made of both porcelain and latex. My starting objects were a Macho Man Randy Savage action figure, a Pillsbury Dough Boy Action Figure, and a small plaster head of a Doe.

It's that time of year again. That time for the annual RAAB Prize. This being my last year to participate in this UConn exclusive, Cricket and Scholastic sponsored, competition, I really did try my hardest, and must say that I'm infinitely happier with this years submission, especially compared to last years. Again, anther poem by Jane Yolen, this years work of literature that needed some illustrative company was "Chicken Parade".

I'm sorry to report that I did not win, but I'm still very happy with what I did.

Now because I'm not sure about the copyright here, I won't be posting my two page spread for the poem with the text template, but you can probably guess as to where the text should fit. So here's my piece, a screen print with some last minute digital fixing.

A little late, but here's a look at our first illustration project from this past fall semester. Starting our as a seemingly simple "get to know you" project, where we were to design a hat which would best embody ourselves (which I am always terrible at; I always find it difficult to boil myself down to one idea). The twist was that after having designed the hats, we to then construct them. Once constructed, we partnered with another classmate, and had to paint a portait of them in their hats.

Eating and Drinking

The region that is home to Florence has one of the most versatile and varied-form cooking traditions in Italy, that we have already mentioned in our tourists’ guide to Tuscany. We are going to try and provide a more specific view, limiting ourselves to the city of Florence and the area immediately around it.

Florentine cooking is linked to a tradition of simple dishes prepared with genuine, tasty but plain ingredients, which has recently been reconsidered by the world of more sophisticated cuisine. Cereals, bread, vegetable and oil (which must be extra-virgin) are the basis of many recipes that just have to be tried in one of the many restaurants in Florence.

Simple food, such as cannellini beans and other vaguely repulsive ingredients such as tripe and livers are transformed into pleasant, tasty dishes, served on both stalls and in local inns and also in luxury restaurants. We can therefore find: fagioli all'uccelletto (beans), boiled and then fried in oil and tomato sauce; trippa alla fiorentina, (tripe) covered in tomato and grated parmesan cheese; lampredotto, the darkest part of tripe, used for soups and risottos, but also liked by many locals as a filling for a sandwich; crostini toscani with liver paté. And the unforgettable "fiorentina" a cut of meat from the Chianina cow, famous worldwide, to be tried in any restaurant in Florence.

Well, it's been awhile since I've been blogging, but I realize that I need keep doing this to keep myself up and running on the interwebs.

So, in a need to keep my site up to date, here are some new things about me.

I'm going to be back at Marvel again this summer, every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, starting June 1st. Should be exciting stuff! I'll be working in the X-Offices as an editorial intern, so I am INCREDIBLY EXCITED! This also means that I'll be spending the entire summer with my bestest bud Zack Rosenberg, and I'll have to spend ALL of my spare time reading every X-Men comic in the last 6 months to catch myself up. So, it should be a very busy summer.

OH! I also won an award! It seems like the good people of UConn have deemed me worthy of the Zachs Endowment Fund, which means that I am the proud recipient of a very decent sum of money to complete quite a heft art project over the next year. Here's a snippet of application essay to give you an idea of why I won:

"I intend to publish a comic entitled "Fifteen Things I Wish I Could Ask My Father", in which I will illustrate a conversation I have with my father wherein I ask him to honestly answer the most important questions I’ve wanted to ask him, but have never had the courage to. In addition to this comic, I will be creating sets of hand-held action-figures that depict my father in various stages of appearing as a hero to me, and will show how I’ve seen him in different lights over the last few years of my life,. This way of representing both him and my view of our relationship will serve as a direct reference to the outright and constant idolization of my childhood fantasy heroes. Finally, I will be creating a fully interactive life-size action-figure of my father, using sculptural casting techniques I’ve learned in the academic setting. As a child I wanted nothing more than to have life size Spider-Man or Power Ranger action-figures for me to play alongside of, and not just with. Creating a life size action figure of my father, the most influential and important real person in my life, will be an incredible realization of a childhood dream, and would communicate the depth of my feelings to an audience in a contemporary and meaningful way."

There's a lot more emotional crap behind it all, but this gives you a good idea of where things are going, both for this project and my arts career in general. It should be both exciting a daunting, as I hope to get the entire book completed by the end of the summer. I'm really nervous, probably more nervous than excited, and I think it'll only get worse with time. Either way, I'm happy that I can do this, and I think even happier that apparently someone thinks my art is worth supporting in a serious way. I suppose it's been a long time coming, but I guess I finally feel like I'm becoming an actual artist.

Well, it's been quite awhile since I've been here to talk to you fine folks, schools been busy, and I'll probably put up some photos of all my final projects from the last semester soon for you folks to take a look at. Howdy all. I know it certainly has been quite a long time, but I have finally returned to your shinning faces once again, to display my work for my adoring fans. Even with a lot of personal drama going on right now, it's good to be back.

The short end of it is that school has to happening, so art is happening. So I'm here to display said art, and this is just the tip of the iceberg for the semester! With advanced printmaking and advanced drawing this semester, I'm bound to be a busy beaver for the rest of the year, and hopefully between pumping out masterpieces week after week, I'll be able to post everything. But, only time will tell.

Hello folks. Here's my latest illustration assignment, a book! Our collective illustration classes have been charged with illustrating four pages depicting our first and/or worst jobs. We will then be collection all of our stories, and publishing them in a big collective book, much like that of "Blab!" from Fantagraphics. This is all 12"x12", paint marker on frosted-mylar, inspired by block prints (I would have done them as block prints, but I wasn't too pleased with how the prints came out, so I went over and did it all again in paint marker, using the prints as templates).

The final book will be printed at 7"x7" HERE.

This weeks free text friday. I like my continued exploration of the line work; and I like that this image is much more resolved, tho I don't like how real the forms look compared to my last. I need to find more of a balance.

Also, it looks better smaller, and I like the accidental coloration of the paper after running through photoshop real quick to bring out the quick spot colors.

It's been awhile, and in accordance with Topics in Illustration this semester, here is the (soon to be renamed) first free text friday post!

I did one black in white and another in color, mostly because I wasn't sure what the color rules were, and also to see what the effects of simple color can do. So, ultimately I steeled on the color, because it has an added visual influence with the color, as well as all the integrity of the line work from the black and white. Hope you all enjoy!

Well, let's see....

Finished my job at Marvel. Sad.

BUT! I left on a good note. Exchanged many emails with artists and editors. Made many new friends. And they'd definitely hire me back next summer. Happy!

And, now that summer is over, that means that school is about to begin. Can say I'm terribly excited. That's not to say I'm not, it's just an odd excited. I am excited for most of my classes individually. But, I'm not excited to have to balance myself between them all, with work, and with my independent projects on top of that.

A tad far from Marissa. Sad. BUT! we're back within walking distance of each other and have two classes together! Happy!

Now when I say "independent projects", I mean the comic I'm co-writing, and solo-illustrating. I'm not going to give too much away. But, with any luck I can have it up and going within the next two months. I've created a character and basic story that I think is pretty good. And I'm partnering with the fantastically talented Daniel Janavey, who is writing the script probably as we speak. So, essentially, I'll be co-creating this creator owned project, and then funding its production myself. Just making comics hopefully on a monthly basis. Leaving piles in dorm buildings, sending out a few to choice friends, family and companies (maybe?), and just letting myself be known. I'm also going to try to get it up online (well see how that goes).

Hello all. It's been quite awhile. Been working practically 24/7, so haven't had much time to talk. Not to mention that I can't talk about work, except that I'm just happy to be there all the time, because of my non-disclosure agreement. Which I'm alright with. Let's just say that I'm starting to impress people, and I'm getting a lot more responsibility day by day.

By that same token, I'll be glad to get to go on vacation after next week. I'll be spending two whole weeks out in California. First week I'll be at the glorious and overwhelming ComicCon, and then the second week is touristy things. But, the best part of it all is spending time with Marissa. I haven't seen her in a very long time, so I'm really just looking forward to just...well...just seeing her, I suppose. I really don't know how to describe it, but, I know at least one person reading this will get what I mean. I hope she doesn't have to work much while I'm there.

In other news. I planned a scavenger hunt with me and about 15 other friends for today. I had the whole day cleared, so I thought things would be great. Turns out I was wrong. Keith was the only one who showed. Even with a month of warning, people can't get their shit together and request one simply day off from work. So the whole day was a bust. Poop.

I've also been thinking about getting a twitter account, just for social networking. But, I'm just don't see the point, really.

Haven't had much time to build it up to its full potential, but I'm hoping to have it done and ready by the end of the summer. Also, I'm starting up my art again. I haven't done a lot since I've been home, what with working two jobs, so I've been slacking. I have all of these ideas [mostly depressing], but I think that visually they're really good. Just have to actually execute them. And I'm starting the scripting process on my comic. I've finally settled on an idea, now I just need to get the full story together in my head. It's hard. Very hard. I think I might also make short comics about some of the plays I've written.

T H E _ B E S T _ D A Y _ T O _ D A T E [within the contexts of my artistic career]

So, ladies and gents, today was my first day on the job at Marvel Comics. It doesn't pay anything, I do a lot of paper work and e-mailing to and for a lot of people that I don't really know. But hell if I don't love it!

It was FANTASTIC! I met the nearly every editor, and hand full of artists, and almost all of the production staff. My artistic background is helping me for sure, as I preform quality checks on all incoming sample comic scripts and prints before handing them over to the editors. I get to see it all before a lot of other people do, even within the company. I've also learned that the art world does not solely run on Mac computers. They use PC's there also; go figure? And, I have to use both.

And this was all just the first day. I think most surprising of all was how many of the interns aren't in the art field at all. And by how many, I mean all but me. I was the only art major there that wasn't a full time staff member. A lot of marketing, communications, and english majors. I supposes that was to be expected. But, not expected, was that there's a lot of them that have no background in collecting Marvel, or any other, comics?! A lot of their only familiarity was with the movies. So sad, really.

But, I suppose that just puts me ahead of the curve. SO, all in all, no screw-ups on my end, no one yelled "stop the presses, the new kid f*ed everything up", and the building is still standing. So, I'd say that's a pretty good first day, if I do say so myself.

Ladies and gents, welcome back to my life. Not much has happened since we last spoke, well, except for the fact that I GOT THE F*ING INTERNSHIP AT MARVEL COMICS!

That's right, I'm now one step closer to actually working there as an illustrator. Suddenly, all of my talk about becoming a comic book artist doesn't feel like just talk anymore. Sure, I'm not making my own comics yet, but I've got a foot in the door. I'm working my way up at my dream job. Hell, just a month ago, I was sure I wasn't even going to get an interview. But, here I am, working at Marvel, getting hands on experience with the pros! It's all so exciting, I don't think I'll be able to sleep for days!

Welcome back ladies and gents. I know that since my last post, you are all eagerly awaiting to hear if I got the position at Marvel or not. Well, like me, you will all have to wait a bit. So, sit in anticipation with me for the next few days.

For now, I'll titillate your senses with a tale of how my day went. Today, of course, I had my interview with Marvel, which went very well, if I do say so myself. But, because I live in New Fairfield, I had to drive in with Dad as he went to his job in the city. So, at 9am today, I had arrived, and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of the 1 train to take me down town to my interview at the Marvel headquarters on 5th Ave. With my suit and tie on, briefcase of important business-type papers in one hand, and sweat in the other, I was off on a day of adventure! WOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

After filling out some paper work, I meet interviewed, confidently, leaving them knowing I could handle anything they would throw at me there. The internship isn't me drawing out new comics, but it's a foot in the door and story for another blog. So, after the interview, I simply wandered. I had time to kill before Dad got off work at 4:30, as it was only 11am, so I took a stroll down 5th Ave. over to the MoMA. Which, was nice. Although, it turned out to be a big, "look at me, I'm wearing a scarf and its 60 degrees out, and my pants are so tight, and the lens on my Nikon is huge, so I know more about art than you" competition with about half the idiots in there, as they ran around, taking pictures with wild abandon, so sense of artistic integrity, as other mindless fools with sketch pads simply re-drew art that already existed, or a pretty girl they were trying to impress. Anyone can re-draw something. A drawing is a blue print for a thing that you saw at some point. It's like how you can build anything with the instructions. The hard part isn't putting it together, it's the designing of the final piece. Once something has been drawn, the work has already been done, so drawing it again doesn't accomplish much [at leas that's how I feel].

So, after 2hrs of MODERN and people watching/sketching, I wrote a postcard, then left, had some lunch, took a stroll down memory lane and visited FAO Schwarts, and then strolled on back to W 65th street to meet Dad at the end of the day and fall asleep on the ride home. And, now, here I am, telling all you people about it, and if you're still reading, then good job. The rest of you, FOR SHAME. Can't even stick it out. I'm disappointed. I thought we were friends. But, I guess that if we ever have a long conversation together, you'll either nod off or just walk away, wont you?

Oh well. Until next time, when I'll have some updates on the whole Marvel thing.

That's right kids! I said it. MARVEL F*ING COMICS. The mecca of comic book production companies. And soon. I will become a part of its woodwork. Hopefully.

Thaaaaaaaaaaaat's right folks. I, Adam Del Re, have an interview with MARVEL COMICS this Monday, May 11th of the year 2009, at 10 in the am! I'm so excited that my head almost exploded. This is a huge step for me in the right direction, so hopefully all goes week and this becomes the start of a band new day of brand new art making in a brand new world!

So, now I must prepare with mock interviews with my dad and a whole lot of other paper work that needs to be done. But, with any luck, I'll be working in the big leagues this summer.

So here is my final project for figure drawing 2, with Patrick Hammie. My crit went really well; Patrick liked all of it, no complaints, so all is good.

The assignment was to draw in the style of two artist. The first two are in the style of John Paul Leon, and the last three are in the style of Alex Kanevsky.

The best part about the crit was when Patrick told me I should think about submitting these works to open galleries to get me name out. I told him I was thinking about becoming a fine artist in addition to my goal of being a comic book artist, and he said that [and I'm ad-libbing here] given my talent and commitment, that pieces could command a huge presence in an open gallery show, making sure that people remember my name.

Hello again. Well, here's the latest illustration I've been working on. They're both about 9x12 for the Leif Erikson Day assignment I had, the only difference is the process...

The top image was the first go at it, a simple marker scan with photoshop color. I hate it, honestly. The bottom image is the second go; I printed a sepia-tone etching and aquatint print, and then added color with watercolors.

Alright folks, here's some illustration assignments I worked on these past few weeks. I'll describe them from the bottom up...

1. My CHANGE assignment, entitled "Anxiety" [I guess?]. 8.5in x 11in, It's a simple black and white marker drawing.

2. This is the JUMBLIES assignment, an illustration based off of the Edward Lear poem by the same name. 17in x 13in, It's an etched background with a lino-cut foreground.

3. These last two are for one assignment. I had to read an article about how many children don't like how their parents are encroaching on their internet privacy, via facebook and such. Both are color pencil with ink overlay, and then digitally enhanced with photoshop. The kid with the computer mask is a small spot illustration, approx. 3.5in x 3.5in. The two robot parents is the cover illustration, approx. 7.5in x 11in.

So, here's these two portraits I worked on for about 20 hours a piece, for Patrick Hammie's Figure II class. Both are 42in x 60in on paper. The first is simple charcoal, with a dash of cola (which I didn't like all too much). The second is grounded with acrylic, then gesso and charcoal.

So, both of these were hug leaps forward for me personally. As a result, I've been thinking about working as a professional artist in the real world. I'll probably still go on with trying to catch my dream of becoming a comic book illustrator. But, I never really considered becoming just a professional artist until these portraits were finished. So, let the confusion ensue.
